Toyota Cylinder heads are all made in Japan although there are some aftermarket ones coming out of China & Malaysia. All the early petrol and diesel cylinder heads were cast iron until the early 80’s when the petrol heads were made of aluminium. It was not until the mid 90’s when the diesel heads in some models were made from aluminium. The first of these was the Toyota surf & hilux 1KZ engine. That’s when they started to give problems due to the high combustion temperatures & compressions with the diesel engine. The landcruiser have remained with a cast iron cylinder head in all the diesel models up to the current model except for the new 4.7 v8 turbo diesel. Up to 1990 both the landcruiser and hilux’s ran push rod configuration then after 1990 they ran a over head camshaft with a bucket & shim set up that had less moving parts hence a more efficient engine. Generally speaking from a mechanics point of view Toyota cylinder heads have been through the years with petrol and diesel vehicles been of a high quality and well manufactured with no real inherent problems.
